A first-edition, first-printing copy of paleontologist Peter Ward’s influential 1994 examination of mass extinction, evolutionary history, and the accelerating modern loss of biodiversity.

In The End of Evolution, Ward looks backward through hundreds of millions of years of life on Earth to ask a distinctly contemporary question: are human activities helping create another great mass extinction? Drawing on paleontology, ecology, geology, and his own fieldwork, Ward compares modern biological losses with the immense extinction events that transformed life at the ends of the Permian and Cretaceous periods.

The book moves between fossil sites and modern ecosystems—from South Africa’s Karoo Basin and dinosaur-bearing rocks in Montana to Hawaii, Madagascar, the Columbia River, and the Philippine Sea—to show how extinction can restructure entire ecosystems and redirect the subsequent course of evolution.

Published in 1994, the book is historically significant as an early popular-science treatment connecting the geological record of mass extinction directly with the modern biodiversity crisis. Ward wrote at a time when concepts now commonly discussed under the heading of a human-driven sixth mass extinction were only beginning to enter broader public discussion. He argued that habitat destruction, population growth, climate change, deforestation, and other human pressures could produce biological losses comparable in significance to the great extinction events preserved in the fossil record.

Contemporary reviewers noted the unusual breadth of the book. Publishers Weekly praised Ward’s clear presentation of complex paleontological ideas, while Kirkus Reviews highlighted his use of deep-time extinction as a framework for understanding humanity’s impact on modern ecosystems.

Ward would go on to become one of the more prominent public voices in paleontology and astrobiology, later coauthoring Rare Earth and writing extensively on mass extinctions, the evolution of life, and planetary habitability. The End of Evolution represents an early stage in that body of work, when extinction biology and biodiversity conservation were becoming increasingly intertwined.
