Published in 1980 by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, The Generalized Reciprocal Method of Seismic Refraction Interpretation by Australian geophysicist Derecke Palmer is a specialized work on using seismic waves to investigate structures hidden beneath Earth's surface.

The book develops the Generalized Reciprocal Method (GRM) for interpreting seismic-refraction measurements. Topics include seismic models, traveltime expressions, refractor velocity analysis, time-depth functions, irregular and synthetic geological models, velocity inversions, blind zones, and the detection of otherwise hidden subsurface layers.

The basic principle is remarkably elegant: generate seismic waves at the surface, measure how those waves travel through and refract between materials with different physical properties, and use their arrival times to reconstruct geology that cannot be directly seen. Variations of seismic methods remain important throughout geophysics, engineering, groundwater studies, crustal research, and subsurface imaging.

This 1980 volume also preserves a snapshot of geophysics at the boundary between traditional analytical interpretation and the increasingly computational methods that would transform Earth science in subsequent decades. Published by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in Tulsa, Oklahoma, it also reflects the historically close relationship between advances in geophysical science and the petroleum and mineral industries.

Today, the book can be appreciated as a historical artifact of applied Earth science: documentation of how scientists developed increasingly sophisticated ways of effectively "seeing" underground. Its historical significance is inseparable from the resource-exploration industries that helped fund and accelerate these techniques, industries whose environmental and atmospheric consequences would become increasingly impossible to separate from their technological achievements.
